According to Freud, the unconscious is divided into two components. The elemental and instinctual Id represents primitive drives, sweeping appetites and unfettered emotion. The discerning Ego represents the intellect, weighing and judging, distinguishing right from wrong. The Ego attempts to impose sober reality upon the Id’s unrestrained pursuit of pleasure.

The Idego chair gives form to Freud's theories. The dark-colored mahogany base represents the primal Id. The light-colored maple seat represents the rational Ego. The rocking motion of the chair enacts man’s struggle to maintain a balance between passion and reason.
